Perhaps the most surprising product announced today is the next generation Kindle that merges reading and writing. The new Kindle Scribe comes with a large 10.2-inch e-ink display coming in at 300ppi and measures in a just 5.8mm thin. For the first time, the Amazon Paperwhite display will be able to support input from a pen, and along with taking notes or scribbling in a book, you can still use the new Kindle Scribe to download and read all of your favorite books. Perhaps, best of all, the pen never needs to be charged. Like previous Kindles, the new model will offer months of battery life on a single charge. There will only be one color, Tungsten, but the unit will be available in three different models, with internal storage options of 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB. The Kindle Scribe will come priced starting at $339, with pre-orders starting today and will begin shipping on November 30.

Although the Echo Show 15 isn’t a new device, Amazon announced during its hardware event that the 15-inch smart display would be gaining Fire TV capabilities. Amazon stated that over 70 percent of Echo Show 15 owners used it to watch videos, so it only seemed natural to add Fire TV to the product. Perhaps best of all, the update will be free to all current and future owners. The Echo Show 15 is now currently available for sale, priced at $249.99

Black Adam to Ram Setu, the 7 Biggest Movies in October

Black Adam, starring Dwayne Johnson, has got to be one of the most overhyped DC films to date — billed as the one to change the “hierarchy of power” in the universe. The marketing campaign here is nuts, with Warner Bros. pumping out TV spot-fashioned clips, while The Rock makes appearances at random events to plug his Zoa energy drink. Black Adam releases October 21, in cinemas. Following close behind is the Viola Davis-led The Woman King, which sees director Gina Prince-Bythewood resuming action-oriented filmography. The Woman King is set to debut October 14 in theatres.

On the Bollywood end, we’ve got the Ayushmann Khurrana-led Doctor G, a campus medical comedy that sees Anubhuti Kashyap making her directorial debut. Will she leave a mark as prominent in Indian cinema as her brother Anurag? Find out when it premieres October 14 in theatres. Tere Bin Laden filmmaker Abhishek Sharma forays into the action genre, teaming up with Akshay Kumar to create an adventure film of sorts, in the vein of Indiana Jones. Ram Setu drops October 25, in theatres.

The month of October has even more great titles in store for us that are not listed below, including the latest in the Predator franchise. Prey follows a highly skilled female warrior, who sets out to protect her tribe from an unknown, advanced alien. Currently, there’s no telling if Disney+ Hotstar will release the film in both English and Comanche dubs, as in the US.

For your convenience, we have curated the biggest October 2022 releases coming to theatres, Netflix, and Amazon Prime Video, which you can check out below.

The 117 Biggest Movies and TV Series on Netflix in October 2022

Ticket to Paradise

When: October 6
Where: Cinemas

Following their troubled romance in Ocean’s Eleven, George Clooney and Julia Roberts reunite in this rom-com as a divorced couple, who travel to Bali to sabotage their daughter’s wedding. Or more specifically, prevent her from committing the same mistake as theirs, 25 years ago. To play the devil’s advocate here, Lily’s (Kaitlyn Dever) parents have a right to be concerned, seeing as their precious daughter is about to marry off a local, Gede (Maxime Bouttier), whom she just met recently.

And so, putting aside their differences, the pair call a truce, in hopes of tricking her into dumping the guy. This would involve drastic measures such as pocketing the wedding rings, portraying him in a bad light, and above all else, maintaining a not-so-aggressive relationship throughout the trip. A good reference point would be Adam Sandler’s 2014 film, Blended, which saw an unlikely middle-aged couple bonding over the course of a vacation, thanks to the fun activities that plague such exotic tourist spots.

Ol Parker — best known for the musical comedy Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again — directs Ticket to Paradise, so maybe we could expect some stellar dance sequences, albeit with licensed TikTok-ish music.

Maja Ma

When: October 6
Where: Prime Video

Here’s another wedding-themed title. A devout housewife’s public image is shattered when a newly-surfaced rumour threatens to destroy her son’s marriage plans. Pallavi Patel (Madhuri Dixit) is the quintessential, middle-aged woman, notorious for her Garba dancing skills, as she is for her cooking. When her son Tejas (Ritwik Bhowmik) brings home a proposal to marry a rich, NRI girl, all the attention in Baroda gets fixated on the middle-class family. Despite the monetary setback, the in-law’s father (Rajit Kapur) agrees to the engagement, simply because he is smitten with Pallavi and can continue seeing her.

While not clearly specified, the Maja Ma trailer hints that a video with sexual implications surfaces online on the eve of the party, causing turmoil amongst both families. Plans to cancel the engagement are put in motion, which is odd, given the American in-law was clearly sexually attracted to Pallavi. Director Anand Tiwari — star of Go Goa Gone — bases this struggle as the crux of the story, with Dixit’s housewife contesting societal norms and establishing her own identity. One that hasn’t been imposed upon her by neighbours.

Gajraj Rao, Barkha Singh, Srishti Shrivastava, Sheeba Chaddha, and Simone Singh top out the cast for Maja Ma.

The Woman King

When: October 14
Where: Cinemas

Known for her commanding persona, Davis plays General Nanisca, leading the all-female warrior tribe of the Agojie, against foes who threaten to violate their honour, enslave their people, and threaten to destroy everything they have built. Set in 1800s West Africa, this historical drama chronicles the uprising of her unit, as she prepares for an all-out war against the Oyo Empire, who were known for trading slaves off to the Europeans.

Actress Maria Bello (Lights Out) conceived the idea for The Woman King, after visiting Benin, where the Dahomey Kingdom used to be located. Pairing up with Dana Stevens (Fatherhood), she put together a story in 2015, only to be met with disapproval from several studios, owing to financial concerns — understandable, given the costume and makeup costs to emulate a real army of warriors. This marks the second team up for Davis and Bello, who previously starred as concerned mothers in Denis Villeneuve’s Prisoners.

Directed by Prince-Bythewood, the majority of the lead lineup is populated with women, except for John Boyega (Star Wars: The Last Jedi), who plays King Ghezo, the ruler of Dahomey. The film also stars Lashana Lynch, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Jayme Lawson, and Adrienne Warren.

Double XL

When: October 14
Where: Cinemas

Sonakshi Sinha and Huma Qureshi (Army of the Dead) star in this social comedy, as two plus-sized women, who navigate through society’s beauty standards, body shaming culture, and female friendship. Double XL, shot extensively in India and the UK, tries to humour both male and female expectations in terms of body types, speaking on subjects such as bra size, thin waistline, and insults they were hurled at during childhood.

Frequent Salman Khan collaborator Satram Ramani directs the film from a script penned by Mudassar Aziz, and Sasha Singh. The film also stars Zaheer Iqbal, Karis Pentecost, Seana Momsen, Sankalp Gupta, and Kay Eluvian in secondary roles.

Doctor G

When: October 14
Where: Cinemas

Uday Gupta (Ayushmann Khurrana), a medical college student, reluctantly finds himself as the lone male in the gynaecology department. Wanting to specialise in orthopaedics, he finds himself amidst the chaos, ridicule, and occasional ragging from his fellow classmates. This is on top of the judgemental looks he gets from patients and nurses, who aren’t used to seeing a male gyno. Saving grace comes in the form of his teacher (Shefali Shah, from Delhi Crime), who advises Uday to change his mindset and “lose the male touch.”

Directed by Anubhuti Kashyap, Doctor G, follows Uday’s change in ideologies, as he explores tender diagnostic methods, romances with Rakul Preet Singh, and deals with struggling couples whose husbands can’t seem to find the right hole. Kashyap conceived the script with Saurabh Bharat and Sumit Savexa, the latter of whom previously wrote Karan Johar’s segment in Lust Stories.

Black Adam

When: October 21
Where: Cinemas

Enslaved and imprisoned in Kahndaq for 5,000 years, Teth-Adam wakes up in the modern world, as the incarnation of Black Adam, hellbent on unleashing his unique form of justice. Harnessing the almighty powers of ancient Egyptian gods, the free anti-hero gets into a scuffle with the Justice Society, shooting jolts of electricity and smacking down anyone who crosses his path.

The film marks Dwayne Johnson’s foray into the superhero genre, reuniting with director Jaume Collet-Serra — both previously worked on Disney’s Jungle Cruise.

Black Adam would be the first-ever feature film to explore Superman’s dark, lightning-honing nemesis, alongside the JSA. The organisation, headlined by Aldis Hodge as Hawkman and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate, has another figure pulling the strings at the top — Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), who has now established herself in a recurring canon role in the DC Extended Universe.

The film was originally planned for a 2021 release, but the timeline got delayed due to the pandemic. Black Adam also stars Quintessa Swindell as the wind power-honing Cyclone and Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, capable of manipulating his molecular structure at will. At this point, we could only wish for Zachary Levi’s Shazam to make a cameo. That would be fun!

Ram Setu

When: October 25
Where: Cinemas

In a quest to save the titular Ram Setu, an atheist archaeologist turned believer (Akshay Kumar) embarks on an action-filled odyssey, through hostile jungles, cryptic tunnels, and stellar landmarks, submerged deep within the ocean.

According to the epic Ramayana, the mythical limestone bridge was built by Lord Rama’s army, in an effort to reach Sri Lanka and rescue his wife Sita from the clutches of the demon king Ravana. Paired with Jacqueline Fernandez as an unnamed character, the film centres on his obsession to prove its existence, and provide evidence through research that the structure is man-made.

Director Abhishek Sharma has reportedly been trying to create a plot since 2007, as he became aware of a court case involving Ram Setu. The film marks Amazon’s first Bollywood production in India, and will naturally end up on its Prime Video streaming platform, following its theatrical run.

Nushrratt Bharuccha and Satyadev Kancharana also join the exploratory mission in undisclosed roles.

Google Maps is getting new updates to make it more immersive

Google is all set to roll out several new updates to Maps over the next few months, but it detailed a bunch of those upcoming features today at its Search On event. According to Google, all these new features are a part of its effort to make Maps more immersive to use. We already got a taste of this new “visual-first” Maps experience at Google IO, but there are a bunch of new features to check out.

Immersive View

The Immersive View feature was first announced earlier this year at Google IO in May. It’ll essentially help you plan your visit to a particular city by giving you a better understanding of that place. The Immersive View feature leverages a combination of both computer vision and AI to bring Street View and ariel imagery together. It’ll be served with weather, traffic, and other information to give you a better understanding of what the place will be like on a given day and time.

Immersive View is launching in Los Angeles, London, New York City, San Francisco, and Tokyo in the coming months, with more cities to be added in the future. So if you’re planning a visit to New York City and want to know what a particular location within the city looks like on a given day, then you can use the Immersive View feature on Google Maps to get a feel for the weather, find out how the busy the nearby streets and restaurants are, and more. This feature will be available on both Android and iOS, so everybody gets to experience the new features.

Search with Live View

A screenshot showing the Live View feature on a phone.

Google is also bringing search functionality to Live View, a feature that overlays right on top of your camera’s viewfinder. The new Search with Live View will let you use your smartphone camera to find various points of interest such as shops, restaurants, ATMs, and more. This is also a part of Google’s effort to build a visual-first, immersive Maps experience. Search with Live View is rolling out in London, Los Angeles, New York City, Paris, San Francisco, and Tokyo in the coming months.

Neighborhood vibe

Screenshots showing Google Maps' new Neighborhood vibe check feature.

Neighborhood vibe is also a new feature that’ll help people understand and find out what’s interesting in a neighborhood. It’ll help users identify this by highlighting popular and trending places and by also showing other relevant information like photos and reviews. Unlike the other new features, Neighborhood vibe is launching globally on both Android and iOS in the coming months.

Eco-friendly routing

Lastly, Google also announced that it’ll soon allow developers to enable eco-friendly routing in their apps. This is an extension of the eco-friendly feature that’s already available in Google Maps in select regions. Eco-friendly routing, in case you don’t know, lets drivers identify and select the most fuel-efficient route to their destinations. With the developers getting an option to enable this in their applications, eco-friendly routing will also be available across all the apps including delivery or ridesharing services. Google added that the developers will also be able to select an engine type to get the most accurate fuel or energy savings estimates. This particular feature will be available to developers in a preview in the coming weeks.

All these features are expected to improve the overall experience of using Google Maps for both users and developers alike. Google Maps continues to remain a popular choice for millions of users, and we think these new features will only make things better for both new and existing users.

Google Search’s ‘About this result’ section will now highlight if a result is personalized for you

Google added a new “About this result” section in Search in February last year to give users more context about results. At first, the panel only provided some details about the source website. However, Google updated it in the following months to show additional info about the characteristics utilized to deliver the result. At its annual Search On event today, Google has announced yet another update for the panel, and it will now show you if a result is personalized or not.

Google says that the About this result section will now clearly state if a result is personalized for the user. As shown in the attached GIF, the section will include a new card titled Personalized for you highlighting that the result is recommended based on the user’s past searches and browsing history. This card will initially be available in English in the U.S., with a broader rollout to follow in the coming months.

Along with the About this result update, Google also announced a new feature that will offer users personalized recipe recommendations. It is rolling out in English for mobile users globally starting today, and it recommends recipes you might like to try based on your past searches and browsing history.

Google Search personalized recommendations screenshot on white background.

Google explains that this new experience will let users search for “dinner dates” to see personalized recommendations for recipes that might be great for a date. Users will also be able to filter results by cuisine or dietary preferences by using search terms like “Thai recipes.”

In addition to these changes, Google also showcased a new Lens AR Translate feature and other Search enhancements at today’s Search On event. You can learn more about these announcements by checking out our previous coverage.

Amazon’s Astro gets smarter with new pet detection skills, an SDK, and more

In case you didn’t know, Amazon has a robotics division, and one of its first products was introduced last year called Astro. The household robot is built for home monitoring but also offers a wealth of other features like being able to assist in everyday tasks or providing remote care for the elderly. Today, the company is expanding Astro’s skillset by introducing new features that build on its strong foundation.

While Alexa Together already provided a wealth of different options and features, Amazon will now be expanding the service, allowing support for up to ten caregivers for one care recipient. Furthermore, Amazon has now added Remote Assist, which allows the primary caregiver to set up Alexa routines remotely. In addition, Alexa Together will have more customizable and personalized daily alerts while also sending caregivers notifications when specific activities occur on connected devices. Astro will be able to better understand the world around it, learning about objects and their place in an environment. It can also learn about doors and windows, alerting owners when something is left open or ajar.

Amazon Astro is a powerful and friendly household robot that can be used for home monitoring.

Going forward, Astro will also bring a personalized touch when interacting with pets. Initially, it will be able to recognize cats and dogs, giving owners peace of mind while they are outside the house. It will even automatically send pictures and videos of pets. Of course, these are just some of the ideas that Amazon came up with, but it thinks there are many more. In order to make these ideas come to life, Amazon is introducing a new Software Development Kit (SDK). The SDK will be first seeded to students at Georgia Tech, the Univesity of Maryland, and the University of Michigan to see what kinds of things they can build for Astro. There was no word on when the SDK would be released to the public.

While Astro is primarily focused for use at home, there are also a variety of different business applications where it can be useful, like having it patrol an office. Working in combination with Ring Virtual Security Guards, it can provide support for a break-in by checking to see what is going on. A virtual security guard can also monitor the situation through Astro and even communicate with the intruders. If this all sounds interesting, you can head to Amazon’s Astro product page and request for an invitation to purchase. In addition to the new updates, Amazon also introduced a wide array of new products, including a Fire TV Cube, Fire TV, and more

Google showcases new Search enhancements at its annual Search On event

In addition to the new Lens AR Translate experience, Google announced a host of Search enhancements at its annual Search On event today. The company revealed that its Multisearch tool will soon be available in 70 more languages and the new Multisearch Near Me feature showcased at I/O this May will roll out to users in the U.S. this fall. Google also gave us our first look at a couple of really cool features coming to Search in the coming months. Here’s a quick rundown of some of the most noteworthy features Google talked about at today’s event.

Enhanced visual results

Google Search will soon provide enhanced visual experiences to help users explore a subject. The upcoming change will provide more relevant and helpful information for queries, including content from creators on the open web. For example, Google states that when searching for topics like cities, users will see stories and short videos from people who have visited the city.

In addition, Search will also show tips on how to explore the city, things to do, and how to get there to help users plan their travels easily. This new experience will launch in the U.S. in English in the coming months. Google has not shared any plans for a wider rollout at the moment.

Improved Search experiences to help users ask questions easily

Google Search is also getting new experiences that “better reflect how people naturally explore information, starting with making it easier to ask questions.” The new experience will provide keyword or topic options when typing in the search box to help users form the search query easily.

For instance, when you look up a destination in Mexico, Search will automatically help you specify your question by providing options like “best cities in Mexico for families.” With this new experience, Google intends to help users find more relevant results for any topic. Google plans to roll it out in English in the U.S. in the coming months.

In addition to helping users form their queries, Google will also start showing relevant topics to help users “go deeper or find a new direction on a subject.” Users will be able to add or remove topics, allowing them to discover things that they might not have thought of while generating their query.

New Search shortcuts

The Google app will soon give users access to a couple of useful shortcuts right underneath the search bar. These shortcuts will let you “shop your screenshots, translate with your camera, hum to search, and more” with a single tap. This feature will first roll out to the Google app for iOS in English in the U.S., and Google will likely release it for Android users in the near future.

Lastly, Google is also reimagining how it displays results in Search to better reflect how users explore topics. In the coming months, Search results will start showing users more relevant content from various sources, irrespective of the format. In essence, Search results will not be limited to text and will include relevant images and videos.

Surface Studio 3: Release date, leaks, rumors, and more

Microsoft’s Surface Studio 3 is coming, and in fact, the Surface Studio 2 is the Microsoft PC that hasn’t been refreshed in the longest period of time. It was announced on October 2, 2018 at the same event as the Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6, two devices that have been revved twice since then.

Moreover, the Surface Studio 2 has last-gen specs at launch. While the new Surface Laptop 2 and Surface Pro 6 were using newer eighth-gen chips, the Studio 2 had seventh-gen processors. This was a problem when Windows 11 was announced. At first, it required an eighth-gen Intel processor, so a brand-new Surface Studio 2, which you can buy today, wouldn’t be supported. The company ended up backtracking on the supported CPUs.

Surface Studio 3 release date: When is it coming out?

Microsoft hasn’t announced the Surface Studio 3 yet, and rumors are starting to circulate that it will be announced at a hardware event on October 12th. The original model was released in late 2016 and the second one came out in late 2018, so we’re well overdue for a refresh.

When Windows 11 released in October, Microsoft released new hero hardware. It ended up being the Surface Pro 8 and the Surface Laptop Studio as the hero devices, and then we got the Surface Go 3 and a Wi-Fi only variant of the Surface Pro X. For this year, alongside this new Surface Studio 3, we’re expecting the Surface Pro 9, Surface Laptop 5, and Surface Pro X 2.

The Surface Studio 3 would fit right in as a new hero product, especially given the similar form factor to the Surface Laptop Studio. But aside from the launch timeframe, there still haven’t been any solid rumors or leaks.

Surface Studio 3: What we’re expecting

When the Surface Studio 2 came out, it came with a spec bump, USB Type-C, and a better display. Here’s what we’re expecting from the Surface Studio 3.

A spec bump

The Surface Studio had sixth-gen processors, while the Surface Studio 2 had seventh-gen chips. Obviously, the Surface Studio 3 should have something substantially newer. From what we’ve heard, it sounds like that might end up using Intel 11th-gen processors, which would be pretty disappointing. Intel has just unveiled its 13th-generation processors for desktops, and 12th-generation models have been out for almost a year. There’s no indication on whether those will be mobile processors like we’ve seen in the past, or if Microsoft is at least switching to desktop parts.

Similarly, the GPU inside the Surface Studio 3 is also likely to be a very big upgrade from the current model. We’re hearing that it will feature Nvidia RTX graphics, which is what you’d expect in 2022. This will most likely be in the RTX 30 series and not the recently-announced RTX 40 series, however, since those aren’t widely available and probably wouldn’t fit in this form factor anyway.

Aside from that, the Surface Studio 3 should come with 32GB of RAM and 1TB of storage, and that could be the only SKU available.

New features (including Thunderbolt)

Another change we’re expecting with the Surface Studio 3 is the addition of Thunderbolt 4 support. This is something Microsoft has finally started to embrace with the Surface Pro 8 and Surface laptop Studio, and it makes perfect sense for it to be here. That means you can hook up more accessories with a Thunderbolt dock, or use a more powerful external GPU when the included one isn’t cutting it anymore.

Microsoft should also be adding support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, similar to other premium Surface devices launched in the past year.

Surface Studio 3: The wish list

A bigger screen

The number one thing on my wish list for a Surface Studio 3 is a bigger screen. Right now, it comes in at 28 inches 3:2, which is pretty sweet. But what if we had options? I’d love to see a big 32-inch option.

Angled view of Surface Studio 2 screen

It would also be nice to see a smaller option, something around 24 inches. Microsoft loves to pretend that the Surface Studio competes with Apple’s iMac, but let’s face it. The new 24 inch iMac with Apple’s M1 processor starts at $1,299. The Surface Studio 2, if you bought one today, still starts at its original price of $3,499.

A lower price

This is similar to what I just said about screen options, because the reason I want to see that smaller option is so Microsoft could make something more affordable. But also, I want the main, 28 inch option to be more affordable, making the new 24-inch option even more affordable.

Rear view of Surface Studio 2

Let’s face it; the Surface Studio is the least successful line of Surface PCs. After all, even if the hardware was brand-new, $3,500 is an absurd amount of money to pay for a desktop, and that’s the starting point. In order for that to make sense, you really have to want that “convertible desktop” form factor.

Say what you want about Apple’s pricing, but the least expensive iMac is $1,099. That puts an iMac in any home that wants one. Microsoft has pushed to that market with tablets and laptops, but it hasn’t even attempted to do that with desktop PCs. It’s time.

Removable storage

I almost put this in the ‘what to expect’ section, because I truly believe this is something Microsoft will be putting in all of its Surface products. It’s already in the Surface Pro X, Surface Laptop 3 and 4, and the Surface Pro 7+.

Removable storage bay in Surface Pro X

Microsoft is renowned for charging ridiculous premiums for storage tiers. For example, the Surface Studio 2 comes in 16GB / 1TB, 32GB / 1TB, and 32GB / 2TB configurations, priced at $3,499.99, $4,199.99, and $4,799.99, respectively. Of course, Microsoft doesn’t want you upgrading your own storage for far less than it would charge you, but that’s one of the benefits of removable storage. And since we’re hearing there may only be one storage variant, it’s even more important to be able to upgrade.

The real benefit, however, is for businesses and governmental institutions. If you’ve got sensitive information on your device and it needs to be serviced, that’s a real problem. With removable storage, you can remove the SSD before sending the device out. It also makes it easier to destroy the storage when recycling the PC. Considering that Microsoft is increasingly focused on the business segment of the market, I’d expect this across the whole portfolio.

That’s all that we know about the Microsoft Surface Studio 3. As we learn more, we’ll update this page with new information.
